Stories of Women Entrepreneurs in our Loans Program - Fall 2012
Weddy is 38 years old and has six children. Life has been hard for her as her husband left her, two of her children were not well, and she was living with her older sister who is also dependent on her relatives. Before Weddy heard about Power or Love's micro loans program from other women beneficiaries, she was not able to earn any money to support her family. After she joined Power of Love's program she was provided with business training and a small loans to start a business. With earnings from her vegetable stand, Weddy has been able to provide for her family. The diet and nutrition of her family has improved, and her children are in school as she is able to pay for school expenses. In addition, she is now living in a one-room rented house. Weddy is happy that she is not dependent on her relatives, and her children are in school. Weddy is on the road to self-reliance and encourages other women to start a business. She has become a role model for both men and women in her community.
Sharon is 50 years and takes care of her six grandchildren and three other dependents. Her husband stopped work five years ago and they were not able to provide for their family. She learnt about Power of Love's micro loans program from a friend who is a beneficiary of this program. Her friend asked her to join the program especially as one of her grandchildren was not well. Once Sharon joined the program, she was given business training and a small loan to start a business. With earnings from her business (she sells fried chicken on the roadside) , Sharon has been able to provide three meals for her family, two of her grandchildren are back in school as she can pay for their school expenses. In addition, she has added two rooms to her house, so that she can supplement her income with rent. Since Sharon's business is doing well, she is on track with her loan repayments. She is happy and confident about her future.
