In June 2014, 22 new women were identified as candidates for our Microfinance program and have been provided with the training and loans needed to start small businesses. Alka Subramanian and Sandra Loeb from the Power of Love Foundation participated in the loan disbursement activities held on June 12.
Power of Love’s micro loans program now has 240 women enrolled and the majority of them are running successful businesses. The businesses chosen by the women are quite diverse and range from groceries (mealie meal - a Zambian staple, cooking oil, rice, sugar, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and beans), to dressed chicken, dried fish, charcoal, baby blankets, books, restaurant, and a salon etc.
While designing our microloans program in 2005, one of the questions we repeatedly asked ourselves was we envisioned for the project We wanted this program to do more than provide business training and loans to women in the community of Matero, in Lusaka, Zambia.
