Dear Power of Love Friend: Happy December!

The holiday season is here and we have much to celebrate. With your support, the computer lab, launched in the Matero slum in Zambia, has been running successfully for the past two months. The lab provides structured classes and on-the-spot user support to school-age children and young adults. Here is what we have learned so far:

Overwhelming Demand: The demand for the lab far exceeds its current capacity. Users often wait 1–2 hours for their turn, with many sharing computers. Two-thirds of the users are girls, and about 50% are in grades 9–12.

Rapid Skill Development: Children are progressing quickly, moving from basic Windows skills to mastering Word, PowerPoint, email, and internet searches. Some students have even started mentoring their peers, allowing us to identify and nurture potential peer educators. We are confident that these peer educators will become change agents within the community, extending the lab’s impact.

Infrastructure Challenges: Unpredictable and prolonged power outages remain a significant challenge. The lab supervisor, who lives in Matero, stays vigilant to charge the laptops whenever power is available, ensuring minimal disruption to the lab’s activities.

In the next few months, our plan is to:

• Open the lab to women, offering them entrepreneurial training and support for their small businesses.
• Strengthen partnerships with local organizations, including churches and schools.
• Expand the curriculum to better align with local school programs and needs.
