February 2022 - Children Living with HIV Need More Support

Dear Friend: Happy February! Hope you and your loved ones are safe.
Over the last two years, our collective attention has been on the COVID pandemic. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the public health systems giving up a great deal of the progress that was made in bringing the HIV epidemic under control. Testing, medication adherence, and care for opportunistic infections have fallen, in particular for children and adolescents. The number of children receiving life saving treatment for HIV has declined and only 54% are accessing ARV medication as compared to 74% for adults. In addition, suboptimal adherence to pediatric HIV regimens further worsens their health outcomes. Our pediatric HIV care program provides children living with HIV a continuum of treatment, care, and most importantly, adherence support so that they take their medication on time and every day. In addition, our program provides these children social protection through adulthood so they attend school and go on to live normal lives. We have documented that for children enrolled in school, adherence to HIV medication is >98% and survival rates >95%.
Please donate generously so we can continue to keep children in school, and families stay healthy, and educated about HIV prevention and care. Every dollar counts. And, as always, 100% of your donations go towards programs and no part is used for overheads.
