August 2024 - Awesome News on the HIV Prevention Front

We are excited to share some incredible news about HIV prevention. As many of you know, with HIV, effective treatment is key to prevention. Two recent milestones in prevention and treatment have marked a significant step forward in our goal of ending this epidemic. First, Gilead Sciences announced that Lenacapavir, an injectable PrEP drug, was 100% effective in preventing HIV in 5,300 HIV-negative women who may be exposed to the virus. Each injected dose provided six months of protection against HIV infection. Second, a combination pill of Lenacapavir and Islatravir, currently being tested for treatment, has proven over 95% effective in reducing HIV viral loads to undetectable levels. What is unique about this formulation is that it requires a weekly dose only.
The introduction of once-daily pills dramatically improved medication adherence, and, we believe, that a weekly dose will be a game-changer by addressing adherence issues associated with daily regimens. These advancements have the potential to significantly improve health outcomes for people living with HIV and prevent new infections.
To help continue the provision of healthcare, education, and training to more than 1,100 families, an anonymous donor has committed to match all contributions up to $5,000 over the next three months. Every dollar counts, so donate generously. As always, 100% of your donations go directly to our programs, and no part used for overhead costs.
