June 2024 - The New Malaria Vaccine May Overdeliver

Dear Power of Love Friend: Happy June!

In this newsletter, we are excited to share great news on top of great news. In October 2022, we had shared information about the approval and launch of a malaria vaccine by the WHO. Recently we received exciting news; the new malaria vaccine is overdelivering on its efficacy. Recent studies have shown that the new vaccine may be effective in prevention of malaria deaths and “all cause deaths” in children by 13%. This is huge. If these results hold, the vaccine would be a major development in pediatric health and malaria control. According to Dr. Steve Taylor, a global health and infectious disease expert, “the vaccine seems to reduce deaths in cases where malaria is only a contributing factor, exacerbating other diseases but not killing the patient itself”. Although there are challenges such as cost and some complexity in administering multiple doses, a significant reduction in malaria-related mortality is anticipated by 2026-2027.

In the interim, until the vaccine is broadly accessible, the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets remains the most cost-effective intervention for preventing malaria and other vector-borne diseases. Our objective for 2024 is to distribute 15,000 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets, which will benefit approximately 30,000 adults or 55,000 children in Zambia—one of the top 20 countries with the highest malaria incidence and mortality rates. The primary recipients of these nets will include young children, individuals living with HIV and/or TB, HIV-positive pregnant women, and older adults in rural, peri-urban, and urban resource-limited settings.

To reach our goal of 15,000 nets, we need to raise funds for an additional 5,000 nets. Help us get to our goal by donating generously. Every dollar that goes towards malaria prevention saves lives. And, as always, 100% of your donations go towards programs and no part is used for our overheads.
