March 2024 - Our Response to the Cholera Outbreak in Zambia

Dear friend: Hope you are doing well.

A quick positive update. Zambia has been going through a cholera outbreak since last October. With more than 19,000 cases, 600 deaths, and a case fatality rate of 3.5% this is the worst cholera outbreak since 2017. The government has launched an aggressive campaign deploying oral vaccines to curb the spread of cholera.

For the last two months, our ground team has pivoted into cholera prevention and has been providing chlorine to treat drinking water and hand sanitizers, attending to families, and educating families. The most time consuming part has been the continuous monitoring and reinforcing of cholera prevention behavior. As a result, there has not been a single case of cholera amongst POL’s beneficiary families (>6,000 adults and children). However, since the root cause of cholera is lack of access to clean water, our goal is to accelerate our water filtration project and target ~1000 families this year to ensure they have safe drinking water.

Many of you stepped up to help prevent cholera. Please continue to do so. Your support saves lives by keeping children and families safe from ill-health. Also please consider donating generously to provide Safe Water Filtration Systems to families that lack access to clean water. Every dollar counts. And, as always, 100% of your donations go towards programs and no part is used for our overheads.
