Dear Friend: Happy New Year! Once again, we are on a Covid surge worldwide. In India, thousands of families living in disadvantaged neighborhoods are struggling to hold on to their livelihood and stay healthy. According to experts, the current surge in COVID infections has the potential to push vulnerable families back into poverty and ill health.
Sarah (name changed, picture on left), the sole caregiver for her six children was facing challenges providing for her family. She wanted to change her circumstances so she could pay for school fees and purchase necessities such as mealie meal and cooking oil.
Jas is a 15-year-old who is being cared for by her mom. She lost her dad when she was eight. Her mom cares for her, her brother, her grandmother, and three orphaned step siblings (there are 12 people in her household). They live with her grandma in a 4-room house which has no electricity or water.
